Mrs. Gultaz Begum
(Out of respect for Mrs. Gultaz Begum, we have done a sketch of her as she did not like her picture taken. This was very customary for a very respectable lady in her generation)

Gultaz Memorial School & College was named after Mrs. Gultaz Begum, mother of the founder Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad.
The beginning of Gultaz Memorial High School and College dates back to the early part of the Twentieth century when a little girl named Gultaz Begum first came to the village of Dulatpur as a young 12 years old bride. She was married to a young Medical student named Fazlul Karim. Dr. Fazlul Karim was the oldest son of Mr. Abdul Jabbar and his wife Mrs. Aziza Khatoon. Dr. Fazlul Karim and Mrs. Gultaz Begum had eight children but tragedy hit their sprawling young family when they lost their oldest daughter in early 1940s and then Dr. Karim suddenly succumbed to death on May 19, 1945. As a young widow with seven children and her youngest child being only six months old, Mrs. Gultaz Begum knew and believed that the only way to survive this tragedy and move forward would be through educating her children and that is exactly what she did. Her oldest son was Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmad, a brilliant Medical doctor, who became one of the leading Pharmacologists of Bangladesh. Her second son, Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad was an eminent British qualified Chartered Accountant. Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad had a very illustrious career in the Private and Public sectors. He was elected as a Member of the Parliament (MP) from Chattogram (Chattogram 4) in 1976. He was the first and only Deputy Prime Minister from Chattogram District for the Government of Bangladesh.
In 1990, Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad and his wife Mrs. Rosy Ahmad founded Gultaz Memorial Girls High School with their own money. They bought the land and built the current school building. From the inception of Gultaz Memorial School and College, Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad’s younger brother Mr. Ali Karim and his cousins Barrister Saifuddin Mahmood, Mr. Shohrab Jabbar and Mr. Shawkat Hossain have been involved and held numerous positions on the Board. Currently his daughters Sarah Ahmad Abedin and Gultaz Shireen Rahman are the leading Board members of Gultaz Memorial School & College.
